law firm branding + websites

Why Law Firm Branding Matters

Your law firm may have all the right services, a loyal following, positive reviews, and an online presence, but is everything working with your branding to enable you to draw in new clients and set you apart from your competition?

When it comes to law firm branding and websites I’ve seen the following on repeat:

+ Outdated content and layouts

+ Stuffy and uptight feel to copy and visuals

+ Generic and bland logos

+ Stiff and ‘we’re better than you’ outshines ‘we’re the badass team here to defend you’

It’s time to embrace law firm branding and websites that stand out and make it easy for you to connect with your ideal clients because it’s none of the above. Imagine folks choosing to work with you because of your crystal clear message, visuals, and website design”

As a brand designer myself, I work with clients day in and day out to create brands that not only represent what they stand for but also create a space for people to understand what you do and why you do it.

If you’re currently on the fence if you want to make the investment in your branding read on to learn more about why it is so important.  You’ll also discover the difference between working with a brand designer vs. DIY’ing your branding. I’m also providing real examples of recent law firm branding projects and highlighting how professional branding helped their respective businesses.

The Importance of Law Firm Branding

When you set out to grow your law firm your goal was likely to get clients and your business off the ground as quickly as possible. Chances are branding wasn’t something that was at the forefront of your mind. Or perhaps you do have branding but as your business has grown and evolved your branding doesn’t currently reflect where you are today and your identity as attorneys.

It can be easy to go online, look up a color palette pick one to two basic fonts, and say ‘case closed’ (pun intended;)) – but effective law firm branding goes beyond picking standard colors and fonts. In reality, poor branding can end up being confusing to potential clients and it can also feel like you’re no different than the lawyer next door.

With your branding, the goal should be to help you become a well-recognized and respected firm. We don’t want you to just fade into another faceless lawyer/firm in your industry.

Well-thought-out law firm branding means:

  • you are standing out from your competitors
  •  building trust and expertise
  • enhancing your firm’s reputation
  • creating cohesive messaging across different channels such as social media, your website, and any other additional marketing materials
  • connecting with clients easily

All of these work together to help you achieve your goal of reaching and resonating with the right clients rather than attracting potential clients who don’t see your value, aren’t a great fit, or feel dissatisfied with your business.

Why You Should Invest in a Brand Designer for Your Law Firm vs DIY

Working with a brand designer instead of a graphic designer means that you’ll have brand strategy and intention put into your branding to ensure that your brand really feels unique and different from what your competitors are doing. A brand designer is not just going to create a copy-and-paste color palette and logo. Instead, they will create a brand vision that makes your business look and feel uniquely yours.

Also, if you know that you’re struggling with your overall brand vision working with a brand designer will help you clarify your message first,  then they will help you create a visual identity that showcases your firm’s values and expertise – carrying your message all the way through.

The value of making the investment in a brand designer can’t be underestimated if you’re serious about long-term growth for your law firm.

Professional expertise brings to the table:

  • design principles
  • strategy, and
  • industry knowledge

to ensure that you are set up for success… or should I say set up for connecting with your clients.

Examples of Law Firm Branding

The Client – Donchez Law firm

Founded in 1987, Donchez Law Firm is a testament to the enduring values of family,

integrity, and justice within the personal injury legal sphere. At the heart of the practice are Jeffrey J. Donchez and Mercedes M. Donchez, a father-daughter attorney team who bring a combined legacy of compassion, expertise, and unwavering dedication to their clients. As a family-run firm, they offer a level of personal attention and care that sets them apart, ensuring that every client feels heard, valued, and confidently represented.

The Client Promise

At Donchez Law Firm, they promise to champion your cause with the full weight of their expertise, empathy, and unwavering dedication. They know that the legal system can be intimidating and they are there to be more than just your attorneys. They are there to be your allies and guide you through the entire process to make it clean and simple.

How we brought the brand to life

Donchez Law Firm has a compassionate yet authoritative brand voice which is why we wanted to create a brand color palette that embodies both the warmth of a trusted advisor with the assertiveness of a steadfast ally.

We wanted their branding to be bright and uplifting, caring, and also clear cut, and direct. For their logos, we aimed to create something that matched the level of professionalism in their practice while still also standing out.

Featuring their established date in the primary logo allows clients to see right from the start that they are not new to this game and are experts at what they do. We also created an icon that felt unique while still feeling very elevated and professional by combining both the “D” and the “L” from their brand name.

Examples of Law Firm Branding

The Client – Seattle Bike Attorney

Seattle Bike Attorney (under the Law Office of Stacie Bain) represents injured bicyclists – acting as their tenacious advocate through litigation and their compassionate guide on the journey to recovery.

Brand Philosophy

They believe that every client deserves to first feel heard – because insurance companies and even those in their social circle want to minimize what has happened to them.

Stacie Bain started Seattle Bike Attorney to do just that. She steps alongside clients offering support and telling their story as an advocate- helping them find the right route to get better. Right from the start, she is behind you 100% and isn’t going to settle for whatever the insurance company throws your way. Instead, she is going to make sure you are fairly compensated and backed up with a rock-solid case.

How we brought the brand to life

When it came to Stacie’s brand we wanted to create an elevated mood that was showcased through deep rich tones and an emphasis on shadows, light, and movement as Stacie’s brand is about empowerment, taking action, and emboldening her clients. This is also why we chose colors such as blue and teal for trust, yellow for optimism, and a deep rich burgundy to establish credibility.  In addition to the color psychology, we considered the colors of the area (Seattle) and the road (with the yellow lines) to bring this through.

For her logos, we paired a classic and elegant script font with a modern and timeless sans serif font. This allowed us to combine both a masculine and a feminine touch for her logos- which carried through her visuals with the brand photos we creatively directed. You can see the dress and studio shots vs the outdoor and biking shots- posing the contrasting environment and highlighting that she is a cyclist herself.

Finally, we created a unique icon for her using the “S” and “O” from her logos to make a person on a bike in a minimal and sleek way.
